To help you enjoy your time in the Wachau – one of Austria’s most beautiful cultural landscapes and a UNESCO World Heritage Site – we have put together a few excursion tips for you.

Culture & History

  • Venus of Willendorf – You can admire the world-famous Stone Age figurine in the small museum in Willendorf.

  • Ruins of Hinterhaus Castle (Spitz) – An impressive castle ruin with a magnificent view over the Danube and the vineyards.

  • Spitz at the Danube – A picturesque wine village with a historic center and cozy wine taverns.

  • Dürnstein Castle – Famous for the imprisonment of Richard the Lionheart; also visit the charming town of Dürnstein with its baroque abbey church.

  • Melk Abbey – A baroque masterpiece and one of Europe’s most famous monasteries.

  • Schönbühel Castle – Imposing, directly situated on the Danube.

  • Artstetten Castle – Habsburg history, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, beautiful park.


  • Burgkirche Gossam – Romanesque church from the 12th century, picturesquely located along the World Heritage Trail and a peaceful place with a special atmosphere.

Nature & Activities

  • Danube beaches – Small natural swimming spots, for example right in Aggsbach or in many other places along the Danube.

  • Hiking on the World Heritage Trail Wachau – Numerous stages through vineyards, forests, and villages. Starts right in the village, ideal for walks with scenic views.

  • Danube Cycle Path – In my opinion, the most beautiful cycling route in all of Austria, running directly along the river. It begins right in front of the house.

  • Stone Labyrinth – An extraordinary site of artfully arranged stones, inviting exploration, reflection, and moments of pause.

  • Viewpoint above Aggsbach Markt – A hike along the World Heritage Trail leads to this magical panorama over the Danube Valley.

Pleasure & Experiences

  • Wachau Danube Railway – Historic narrow-gauge railway along the Danube, running between St. Valentin and Krems and connecting many sights along the way. The Aggsbach Markt station is located right in the village.

  • Boat trip on the Danube – For example, from Krems to Melk, with magnificent views from the water.

  • Apricot blossoms & apricot products – Depending on the season, delicious regional specialties.

Kids

  • Hubhof – The Family and Dino Park offers fun, games, adventure, and leisure for young and old alike.
